The “Caspian Basin in Transition: Bridging Geosciences and Environmental Challenges 2024” conference, held at UFAZ from June 3-6, continues. The main speakers on the second day were Professor Lev Appelbaum from Tel Aviv University and Honorary Professor at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), and Assistant Professor Matteo Tarantino from the Catholic University of Milan. Presentations were also made by Professor Sassan Saatchi from the University of California and a researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Stefano Vignudelli from the Italian National Research Council (CNR), Anna Kostileva from the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, and Susanna Leroy, a representative of the European and African Mediterranean History Laboratory (LAMPEA), who addressed various topics and answered participants' questions. Following this, there were poster presentations.

The conference on the Caspian Basin aims to present and discuss new approaches, methodologies, and data in geosciences in response to the challenges of energy transition. Special attention will be given to topics related to the Caspian Sea basin, including global issues during the transition period, exploration and sustainability of geo-resources, assessment and prevention of geo-hazards, and the resilience of natural and anthropogenic systems to global changes. For your information, although 73 abstracts were submitted for presentation, 42 were selected for oral presentations, and 25 were chosen for poster displays. The conference also addresses topics related to sustainability and climate change, intended to be discussed within the framework of COP29.

The conference is set to cover four main themes, with speakers’ presentations focusing on these topics. The themes include “Exploring and Sustaining Georesources of the Caspian Basin,” “Geohazards Assessment and Prevention,” “Climate Change and Resilience in Transition Time,” and “Frontiers in Geosciences.” Participants from Azerbaijan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, France, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, South Africa, Italy, Finland, and Israel will attend the conference.
