UFAZ Students Gain Hands-On Experience During Geological Field Trip

As part of their practical training, third-year students in Geology, Geophysics, and Georesources took part in a fieldwork program at several important geological sites in Azerbaijan. They visited places like Khizi, Perekeshkul, Altiagach (Khizi), Kirmaky Valley, and Yasamal Valley to explore and study real geological formations.
The field trip was led by local and international experts – Dr. Quentin Boesch, Dr. Guilherme Bozetti, Dr. Arzu Aliyeva, and Dr. Lucas Bofill. During the trip, students learned how to use tools like magnifying lenses, compasses, hardness tests, and Jacob’s staff. They also practiced geological mapping and drawing stratigraphic columns.
The main goal of the fieldwork was to help students understand the geological history of different rock outcrops in the Greater Caucasus region. At each site, they studied the types, structures, and textures of rocks to learn about how they were formed, how old they are, and how tectonic forces may have changed them.
This hands-on experience allowed students to connect theory with practice, improve their observation skills, and gain a better understanding of regional geology. It also helped prepare them for future careers in geoscience, energy, and environmental fields.
