UFAZ Chemistry teacher Samir Karimov, along with coauthors including Professor Maurice Millet from Strasbourg University, has published a research paper in the Heliyon journal. The article is titled "Radiolytic degradation of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) in some organic solvents by gamma rays: The kinetic properties of complete dechlorination of TCB and its pathway."

This research was conducted utilizing resources from the Institute of Radiation Problems of ANAS and the Analytical Chemistry Lab at UFAZ. Given that Heliyon is indexed in prestigious databases such as Scopus and PubMed, the article is easily accessible to the global research community.

In the study, 1,2,4-TCB was selected as a chlorinated compound analogous to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) like hexachlorobenzene. The degradation of 1,2,4-TCB using gamma radiation was investigated in various organic solvents, including methanol, ethanol, hexane, and benzene. The research provides detailed insights into the kinetic properties and pathways of TCB dechlorination in organic systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of gamma radiolysis in breaking down TCB into simpler compounds. Notable findings include the identification of degradation intermediates such as dichlorobenzenes, monochlorobenzene, and the final product, benzene.
