UFAZ teacher Samir Karimov’s article published in Radiation Physics and Chemistry Journal indexed in WoS and Scopus

UFAZ chemistry teacher Samir Karimov has published a new article in the Radiation Physics and Chemistry journal, indexed in WoS and Scopus, co-authored with Lala Gasimzada (lab assistant) and Shabnam Feyziyeva (UFAZ alumni).

The article, titled “Gamma Irradiation-Induced Degradation of Hexachlorobenzene in Methanol: Kinetics, Mechanism, and Dehalogenation Pathway,” focuses on hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a persistent organic pollutant (POP) and organochlorine compound (OCC) that poses significant environmental and health risks due to its high stability and solubility in fats, oils, and organic solvents.

This study investigates the degradation of HCB in methanol using gamma irradiation with a 60Co source. The results demonstrate that gamma irradiation can effectively remediate persistent organic pollutants (POPs), achieving 100% conversion of hexachlorobenzene. Furthermore, the chlorinated benzene byproducts were also fully degraded. Kinetic analysis and chlorine mass balance support the proposed radiolysis mechanism as a potential pathway for the dehalogenation of HCB.
