About event

UFAZ is honored to announce a special research seminar in celebration of Earth Day, which will take place on April 22. The session, titled “The Mechanics of Seismic Drained Soil Liquefaction: A Numerical, Theoretical, and Experimental Study,” will be delivered by Dr. Renaud Toussaint, invited professor at UFAZ.

The seminar will explore the complex behavior of soils under seismic loading, combining theoretical insights, numerical simulations, and experimental approaches to understand how drained soils may liquefy during earthquakes.

Dr. Renaud Toussaint is the Head of the Earth and Environment Institute of Strasbourg (ITES), a research institute affiliated with the University of Strasbourg, CNRS, and ENGEES. He is also a Director of Research at CNRS in geophysics and serves as an adjunct professor at both UFAZ and the University of Oslo (PoreLab, Physics Department).

His work spans research, teaching, and scientific communication, focusing on the physical modeling of Earth system phenomena. His areas of interest include fluid and solid mechanics, multiphysics interactions, and the development of innovative monitoring techniques. He combines theory, simulations, experiments, and fieldwork to study both natural systems - such as avalanches and fault mechanics - and human-impacted environments like construction sites and reservoirs. With over 160 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Toussaint is internationally recognized for his contributions to geophysics and Earth sciences.

The seminar promises to offer valuable insights into one of the most critical challenges in geotechnical engineering and earthquake science. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to deepen your knowledge and contribute to the advancement of the field!
